My brother and I recently joined Foot2Water on a trip to Bay Saint Lewis, Mississippi. Bay Saint Lewis is a small town situated on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico and was recently hit by hurricane Katrina. Like millions of others in America I had seen the damage done by Katrina to New Orleans, and like most of those millions I had put the disaster in the back of my mind after about two months.
Joining Ike on this trip was a true eye-opening experience. As I helped clean out houses that had been sitting untouched since the hurricane hit and observed people who lost most everything, I felt God’s presence. From all this destruction and chaos there comes the chance to rebuild, rebuild houses, churches, and most importantly lives. Through pain comes a chance to in a sense promote Christ and his love.
We were housed in the local First Baptist Church, and through the efforts put forth I saw lives being touched and healed. As Christians we are the “hands and feet” of Christ, and I realized through this the essential purpose of our existence after salvation: exemplifying the light. That is the mission of Foot2Water: to exemplify the light.
